Some stud finders will be useless on plaster walls, as they cant tell wood lathe from wood stud. Hand split wood lath was prepared using an adze, or less often an axe, to split lath strips out of sawn or hewn logs. Locating studs behind plaster walls When hanging anything heavy, its always best to find at least one stud, as no fastener is more fool-proof than screwing directly into a thick piece of wood. ![]() Hand split wood lath will vary in width as you see in our photo. Put them together and marked out and cut a hole for the backing box. Put a piece of painter tape over the spot you plan to drill and drill through the tape.
